Sowing, growing and planting – gardening jobs for March
It's hard to believe we are already into the third month of 2017! Here is our advice to get you outdoors and enjoying the garden, whether you're sowing, growing or planting! See you soon at the Garden Pavilion Claire Hayes, Manager, Powerscourt Garden Pavilion Spring bulbs 1. This is the best month for planting roses in heavy soils or in cold areas. Avoid planting in areas where roses were previously grown, otherwise new introductions may suffer from replant disease. 2. Plant summer-flowering bulbs. 3. Indoor forced bulbs that were in the house for winter displays, but which have now finished flowering, can now be planted into the garden, taking care not to disturb the roots. Gardening 4. Check whether containers need watering. Even at this time of year, they can dry out. Pots that are sheltered by eaves or balconies can miss out on any rainfall. If in doubt, check the compost at a hand’s depth to see if it feels dry. Aim to keep pots moist, not wet, and don’t let them dry out. 5. Pots and tubs benefit from topping up with fresh John Innes compost. Old compost can be removed and replaced with new if there is not much room for topping up. 6. Pot up houseplants showing signs of being root-bound or top dress large containers with fresh compost.
