Regular deadheading will encourage a second flush of flowers. Feed hanging baskets and containers with tomato food or a multi-purpose liduid fertiliser like miracle gro or phostagen to encourage both growth and a longer flowering period. Perennials are ready available at this time of the year, dead head and cut back early flowering plants to tidy up borders and make room for later flowering plants. Plant Verbena bonariensis, Agapanthus Dr Brouwer, Digitalis Dalmation White, Lupins, Penstemon & Coreopsis to add height into borders and attract bees to the garden. Hosta’s are great for adding a splash of foliage colour to shady areas, remember to keep watch for slugs and apply a slug & snail killer as a barrier. Agapanthus Add Nemesmia dent Confetti, Geranium cin Ballerina, Phlox amon Variegata & Campanula garg Major for low spreading perennials that will fill out border edges and rockeries. Keep weeds under control in the vegetable garden so they don’t compete with your plants for nutrients and water. Ventilate greenhouse crops in hot weather, keep watch for aphids and mildews and keep under control with bug clear. Continue to feed tomatoes, peppers and cucumbers. Tomatoes   Watch out for Cabbage White Butterfly eggs on Brassicas. Keep blight at bay from potatoes and tomatoes with a bordeaux mixture. Keep vegetables well-watered in dry spells. Apply netting over fruit to prevent birds feasting off this years crop. Check roses regularly for aphids and black spot spray when necessary. Newly planted trees and shrubs will need to be watered in dry spells. Water and feed your indoor plants, keep watch for signs for pest and disease. Lawn Maintenance Raise the height of the mower mid-July as lawn growth slows down, this will help high traffic lawns not to look as tired.
