Gardening Jobs for October

Gardening Jobs for October
Wow, this year is flying by! We are now coming to that 'in between' stage of promoting growth and starting to get our plants ready for a little sleep! There is still a lot to do so we can still go out and enjoy our garden. Here are a few things we can do this month.

Viola

  • Plant out your Violas and winter Pansies,Primulas and other spring bedding plants.
  • Keep planting those spring flowering bulbs
  • Plant out any herbaceous perennials
  • Cut back faded herbaceous perennials and divide overcrowded ones.
  • Make sure to keep an eye on watering still, especially the newly planted!
  • After the first frost, lift cannas and dahlias. They can stay in if you are in a mild area if covered in straw etc….
  • Lift your tender bulbs and store.
  • Clear any summer bedding that looks ragged and replace.
  • Clean up hanging baskets – replace faded plants and deadhead and feed remaining. We’ve got heathers, trailing ivies and bulbs to add here at the Pavilion.

Hanging Basket

  • Consider raising your patio pots on to bricks or plant stands to avoid them sitting in water.
  • All tender plants can come inside for the winter.
  • Check bulbs being forced. If there’s signs of life (leaves) bring to a cool, light room.
  • Pick Autumn rasberries.
  • Dig up remaining potatoes.
  • Net ponds before the trees lose their leaves.
  • Cover leafy veg crops with netting to protect from birds.
  • Reduce watering of houseplants.

Raspberry

Don’t forget this is still a great time to plant – it is still warmish and we have the added benefit of more rain. If there are a few holes in your beds or you are really thinking of putting some structure in your garden with some evergreens, now it the time! Come in and let us help you decide or have us make up a winter hanging basket for you.  Enjoy that garden!   See you soon! Powerscourt Garden Pavilion Team
