Looking After Your Green Christmas Gift

Looking After Your Green Christmas Gift
Looking after your green Christmas Gift – Tips on how to look after Christmas present houseplants: You got a beautiful houseplant as a Christmas gift but now you have to look after it. This is what you have to keep in mind:
  • Find a spot with good natural light and keep it away from central heating. Try spray misting your house plant especially in winter when the air is dry or even have a bowl of water in the room close to the radiator. Put the plant where it is safe and not to be knocked over by children and animals.

  • Most indoor houseplants require to be kept moist on a consistent basis. Houseplants usually die from too much water or irregular watering e.g. too little and then too much. However, with your cacti and succulents you could skip a week or two between watering.

  • Feed your indoor houseplants on a regular basis during the growing season – especially when in flower. Because your houseplant is in a pot, it can take only so much nutrients out of the soil and that’s why the nutrients have to be replaced. With extra feeding your plants will last much longer.

  • Keep a look out for pests and diseases and treat them accordingly. Usually a general ready-to-use insecticide or fungicide will do the trick. Also try to keep your plants free from dust and insects by cleaning them with a soft damp cloth.

  • If necessary, prune your houseplants to prevent them of becoming overgrown. Depending on what you have, thin them out which will promote new growth and also to keep them lovely and compact.
